Carmelite nuns, who took care of abandoned girls, have founded the convent in the early 18th century. There still exists a “baby wheel” in the convent for the anonymous relinquishing of unwanted babies.
In the entrance garden stands a menhir, found in Areias das Almas, Porches, dated to between 5000 and 4000 B.C.
At the moment, the convent is in use as Cultural Center of the city.
