Portimão had always been a small fishing centre and when the fish industry began to gain importance in the XIX century, so did Portimão and as a new period of prosperity began, the town evolved into one of the most important harbours of Portugal. The Municipal Museum, located in an old fish canning factory, has always some exhibition worth seeing.
